On August 29, KEYPAT*, a support team from Kanazawa University that aims to provide mental health care in times of disaster, visited the Suzu Branch of the Ishikawa Prefectural Nanao Special Needs School to give a flute and piano concert and a cooking class with a nutrition education program.
About 40 students, Teacher and community members gathered for the concert. There was time for impromptu performances in response to requests from the students, who swayed their bodies as they listened to the flute and piano music. Teachers commented, "It was a healing time. The combination of flute and piano was refreshing and perfect for the lingering summer heat," and "It was good that there were many Ghibli songs that the students seemed to like. It was a wonderful time on the first day of the new school year."
Following this, under the guidance of a licensed dietitian, students prepared Shiratama Anmitsu in the school kitchen. Elementary school students chopped bananas with their teachers, while junior high and high school students shaped shiratama rice dumplings and boiled them in a pot. They then added fruits such as kiwi, peach, and mandarin orange, along with colorful agar jelly prepared by the dietitian. Each student selected their preferred ingredients to create and enjoy their own Shiratama Anmitsu. Teachers shared their impressions, saying, "It was a great activity that all students could participate in through simple cooking," and "Thank you for coming all the way and providing such an enjoyable experience."
KEYPAT continues to carry out support activities for the school community, including mental health care for students and faculty members, with participation from local community members.
* “KEYPAT” is an abbreviation of the Kanazawa Educational Yell Psychological Assistance Team. KEYPAT is an official university-wide team at Kanazawa University that supports people who have mental disorders due to disasters. The team consists mainly of certified psychologists.
